Haemorrhoid Surgery Overview

Varicose veins inside or just outside anus are haemorrhoids or piles. The cause of haemorrhoids is not known exactly but is mainly caused due to family history, pregnancy or if you are involved in the occupation involving standing for long hours. Constipation causes pressure inside the abdomen that makes bowel motion strenuous again causing haemorrhoids. Haemorrhoid surgery can be performed using general anaesthesia, local anaesthesia or spinal block. Various surgery procedures include Sclerotherapy, Ligation, Laser surgery, Cryosurgery and Haemorrhoidectomy. In Sclerotherapy, injecting the chemical in the blood vessels does servicing of haemorrhoids. This chemical causes spasm in the vessels and seal shut. Haemorrhoids shrivel due to lack of nutrients and oxygen.

In Ligation, using a tight rubberband cuts off blood supply to the haemorrhoids. Haemorrhoids shrivel due to lack of nutrients and oxygen.

In Laser surgery, haemorrhoids are burnt using a targeted laser beam.

Haemorrhoidectomy is the most common form of haemorrhoid surgery. It is done using general anaesthesia and a special device is inserted into the anus by the surgeon to see the haemorrhoids. Laser, scalpel or staple gun is used to remove the haemorrhoids. Anus and rectum membrane lining are then sewn to the muscle so that recurrence of haemorrhoids can be prevented.

After the haemorrhoid surgery

After the surgery, you are made to lie down on your back using a support with floatation pillow under your buttocks. To relieve the pain, icepack are used on the anal area. For recovery from haemorrhoid surgery, you need to follow a strict diet and avoid constipation by eating lots of fruits and vegetables so that your body gets enough fibre. Use over the counter laxatives if you need help to move bowels and drink plenty of water. Some of the alternatives to haemorrhoid surgery are change in dietary habits, creams and stool softening medications.
