Head Lice Alternative Treatments Can Often Work

Head lice alternative treatments are not usually endorsed by the medical profession or from such prestigious universities such as Harvard University. They are definitely not endorsed by head lice. However, time is of the essence when you discover when you have head lice. You need to begin war against them right away. Many people like to immediately do a head lice alternative treatment and then turn to an over the counter head lice treatment.

Lack Of Side Effects

One of the reasons why many people prefer to use head lice alternative treatments is that they usually do not have any bad side effects – not even a bad smell, like with over the counter preparations. However, if you start getting rashes, hives or have trouble breathing, stop the head lice alternative treatment and call your doctor.

Urban Legends

There are a lot of urban legends about how to get rid of head lice that are not to be confused with actual head lice alternative treatments. One includes putting bleach on your head and letting it sit there for ten or fifteen minutes. Now, granted, you probably will kill the head lice, but you will also wind up in the hospital. In the scale of misery, choose the head lice over the chemical burn on your scalp any day.

Another urban legend that is NOT a recommended head lice alternative treatment is to live in freezing conditions for a few days. Although this will kill a lot of the head lice, again, you are putting your health dangerously at risk. I have a suspicion that this legend got started as a practical joke.

Suffocating Agents

The best treatment for head lice that you can find is the use of a liquid that suffocates the parasites. This is recommended particularly for adults. If you are not sure your child can handle a head lice alternative treatment, call your doctor or pediatrician for help. Avoid the use of essential oils with small children.

Get your hair really sopping wet. Then, smother your hair with the suffocating agent – shampoo, body lotion, Vaseline, conditioner, hair gel, massage oil, olive oil – it doesn't matter. Let it sit for at least ten minutes. Then comb out your hair with a nit comb or flea comb. Wipe the comb and resulting scum on a paper towel, then burn or trash the paper towel. Then, rinse your hair. Repeat in about three or four days.
